New equipment and procedures are evaluated for the direct analysis of metals in lubricating oils without the need for sample pretreatment or dilution. A modified Babington principle nebulizer equipped with a sample heater is shown to be capable of producing aerosols from undiluted oils, which are suitable for introduction into an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometer. Heating the samples immediately prior to nebulization greatly increases the output of aerosol and reduces output variations in emission intensity due to differences in oil manufacture and viscosity. The type of organometallic complex used in the preparation of standards is shown to be unimportant if the plasma observation region is properly chosen. Performance of a conventional plasma geometry and an inverted torch geometry on analysis of field collected oil samples is presented. 相似文献

The theory of shear magnetostriction (SMS) in ferromagnetic metallic systems is formulated in terms of Green functions in real space for a tight binding model. This is general enough to include amorphous (“glassy”) alloys, as well as crystalline materials. It is shown that the SMS coefficient λs(EF) must have at least four zeros as a function of band filling EF through the d-band, which explains the change in sign between Fe alloys and Co, Ni alloys. A method is presented for computing the indefinite integral of the imaginary part of the product of two Green functions expressed as continued fractions, not necessarily over the same band width, and some preliminary calculations explore the importance of various terms. 相似文献

A detailed calculation of the optical absorption between surface states on silicon is reported and the results compared with the observed absorption. Actually the observations relate to the (111) surface whereas the calculations involved the better understood (110) surface, but arguments are advanced to suggest that similar results should be obtained for both and a simulated (111) calculation presented. A model, which accurately reproduces the results of complete theoretical calculations, is used to obtain the surface state energies throughout the two-dimensional Brillouin zone, and to obtain the momentum matrix elements at each k point by utilising the effective mass sum rule. The formation of a band gap between the surface state bands, arising from surface rearrangement, is incorporated into the model in a physically sensible manner. There is very good agreement in both shape and absolute magnitude between the calculated and observed absorption clearly indicating that the measured absorption does arise from surface states. The (1, 1, 0) calculations show large polarisation effects which should be observable on reconstructed (1, 1, 0) silicon surfaces or on the III–V compounds. 相似文献

Background
Antisense oligonucleotide (AON)-mediated exon skipping is a powerful tool to manipulate gene expression. In the present study we investigated the potential of exon skipping by local injection in the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) of the mouse brain. As proof of principle we targeted the splicing of steroid receptor coactivator-1 (SRC-1), a protein involved in nuclear receptor function. This nuclear receptor coregulator exists in two splice variants (SRC-1a and SRC-1e) which display differential distribution and opposing activities in the brain, and whose mRNAs differ in a single SRC-1e specific exon.Methods
For proof of principle of feasibility, we used immunofluorescent stainings to study uptake by different cell types, translocation to the nucleus and potential immunostimulatory effects at different time points after a local injection in the CeA of the mouse brain of a control AON targeting human dystrophin with no targets in the murine brain. To evaluate efficacy we designed an AON targeting the SRC-1e-specific exon and with qPCR analysis we measured the expression ratio of the two splice variants.Results
We found that AONs were taken up by corticotropin releasing hormone expressing neurons and other cells in the CeA, and translocated into the cell nucleus. Immune responses after AON injection were comparable to those after sterile saline injection. A successful shift of the naturally occurring SRC-1a:SRC-1e expression ratio in favor of SRC-1a was observed, without changes in total SRC-1 expression.Conclusions
We provide a proof of concept for local neuropharmacological use of exon skipping by manipulating the expression ratio of the two splice variants of SRC-1, which may be used to study nuclear receptor function in specific brain circuits. Abstract An analytical theory of the ordering interaction J(R ij ) in structural phase transitions mediated by elastic relaxation in the material is outlined. The ordering process in cell i sets up a local stress field due to the sizes, shapes or displacements of atoms or atomic groups, which is propagated elastically to a distant cell j. The atomistic theory for ferro- and antiferro-elastic transitions takes into account two types of singularity, one due to elastic anisotropy and the other to the Zener interaction J z of infinite range in ferroelastic transitions. The form of J k in Fourier space is highly anisotropic with a few “soft” directions coinciding with the orientation of twin boundaries. The asymptoptic J(R) at large R is shown to be very anisotropic as well and decays as R ?3 in ferroelastic and R ?5 in antiferroelastic systems. Computer simulations for a three-dimensional model of about 29,000 particles show a strong tendency to form tweed texture, as observed experimentally. Well above the structural phase transition temperature, the strain fluctuations show well-developed embryos of the tweed texture. On quenching to below the transition temperature, a pronounced micro-twinning appears which follows almost exactly the shape of the embryos and then develops towards a stripe texture. After a certain time needle-shaped domains are formed and a peculiar step-wise process of generating new stripes is observed. 相似文献
